It had been just shy of a year after the untimely passing of Kari Benson Burns that Jim Duvall held the first memorial breakaway roping, May 12, 2006 in Billings, MT with the WTRC's Northern States Invitational. It only took Jim the few years to grow the breakaway into something big. The Kari Burns Memorial was dubbed the World's Richest Breakaway in 2011. Jim decided to pass along the roping to Kari's niece Jacey Fortier after the 2014 roping.
In 2015 the Kari Burns Memorial became the World's Richest Breakaway in memory of Kari Benson Burns, Betty Benson, and Gilean Newman. In that same year the entries went from 80 to 140. With the huge growth the breakaway decided to move to its own day before the WTRC's Northern States Invitational.
The World’s Richest Breakaway Roping is going on its 19th year and we want to keep the memory of these 3 ladies alive for many more years to come.
